NOLINEAR BEHAVOR OF RC SHEAR WALLS WITH DAMAGED PLASTICITY MODEL CONSIDERING LOAD RATE EFFECT

It has been observed that strain rate has effects on concrete material properties and the behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. As a typical structural member, the dynamic behavior of RC shear walls under seismic dynamic loads and/or strong winds is a crucial topic. In recent years, with the development of test facilities such as E-Defense in Japan, efforts have been made to study the hysteresis model of RC shear walls and other structure members under dynamic loadings experimentally. But available test results on the dynamic behavior of RC shear walls are extremely limited because of the limitation of the large-scale test facilities for dynamic tests. In this study, numerical simulations on the dynamic nonlinear behavior of two RC shear walls under dynamic loadings by introducing the strain rate effect in the concrete damaged plasticity model in AB AQUS were carried out. The performance of RC shear walls under monotonic loads with different load rates was studied and the effect of the load rate on their behavior was discussed. For the purpose of validation the developed dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) model, it was employed to forecast the static behavior of the two specimens which had been statically tested and the corresponding test data are available. Simulation results were compared with the test results and it is shown that the developed FEA model considering load rate can forecast the nonlinear behavior of the tested RC shear walls with acceptable accuracy by taking the load rate a very small value. Simulation results on the two RC shear walls under different load rates show that the loading bearing capacity of RC shear walls increases with the load rate.
