In order to fully understand and model resin infiltration during manufacture of a composite part by VARTM, the compaction characteristics of the fibrous preform must be known. An experimental study was conducted to measure the compaction behavior of fibrous performs using both static and dynamic test procedures. Two types of performs were investigated, a carbon fiber multi-axial warp-knit (MAWK) fabric and an S-glass, 8-harness satin weave fabric. The results showed that compaction data obtained using the dynamic test procedure with crosshead speeds in the range of 0.127 mm/min - 0.254 mm/min agreed well with data obtained using the static test procedure.
