In constructing infrastructure in urban areas, circular pipes have been used for over a Century. Rectangular pipe on the other hand, especially those installed by the jacked tunnel method or by a rectangular pipe jacking machine, is a fairly recent development. The advantages of rectangular pipe over circular pipe include a larger effective cross-sectional area and reduced maintenance effort. The disadvantage of rectangular pipe has been the difficulty in mechanized installation. To cope with this challenge, "the rectangular pipe jacking machine" was developed. This machine has a face structure consisting of three rotating shafts each equipped with cutters at varying positions. This arrangement improves ground mixing and mud slurry interaction compared with other rectangular excavating machines. As a result of this mechanism, this machine has the ability to construct a rectangular pipe line faster than other construction methods with improved safety and economy. This paper discusses the mechanical aspects of the pipe jacking machine, field data from a construction site where the machine was used, and examines about the applicability of the technology.
