A Probabilistic Approach to Account for Temperature Impact on Flexible Pavement Stiffness

In recent years, recognition of the influence of environmental factors on pavement performance has greatly increased and many research studies have focused on this area. Although there is agreement on the significance of temperature and moisture impact on pavement performance, only limited field measured data is available to quantify its magnitude. Most available data is based on laboratory studies, such as the impact of temperature on asphalt mix stiffness. However, in reality pavements perform as one structure, and overall pavement performance is of more interest than the performance of individual layers. In this paper, field data collected from two New Jersey and California pavement sections is used to develop a probabilistic approach to address the daily changes in pavement stiffness and how these changes can be considered at the design stage. This data was collected as a part of field studies performed to quantify the impact of temperature and moisture on pavement performance. This probabilistic approach yielded distributions that were extremely similar for the New Jersey and California sections, despite the major differences in environmental zone, temperature range, and pavement structure between the sections.
