Alkali metals, particularly sodium (Na) have been chemically and electrochemically intercalated into graphite-like layered material with a composition BC_2N. Na intercalated BC_2N was obtained at a temperature of 570K by vapour phase reaction (two-bulb method). The Na intercalated BC_2N was also prepared by electrochemical method in 1M-NaPF_6/EC+DEC electrolyte solution. X-ray diffraction analysis and the electrochemical capacity suggested that the Na intercalated BC_2N was a mixture of 1 st and 2nd stage compound. X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicated the bottom of conduction band for BC_2N was at the energy lower than that for graphite, which could lead to the intercalation of Na into BC_2N easier than that into graphite.
