BUAA Student Microsatellite (BUAA-Sat) is a small spacecraft designed for plateform demonstration and technology experiment with support of Beihang University Students Education Program. Most of the designs, analysis and tests are completed by undergraduates and graduates under the guidance of professors and engineers. It's designed to have minimal mass, size, cost and ability of rapid-response. The BUAA-Sat will first demonstrate the satellite platform. Then, the coilable mast compacted in launch vehicle will deploy and cameras will take photos of the deployed mast which can stable the BUAA-Sat via gravity gradient torque. There is another camera fixed on the bottom of BUAA-Sat to observe the Earth. The BUAA-Sat has a layer-rod configuration while purpose-similar equipments are installed on the same layer to compose the module with special functions. All modules with the standard software and hardware interface communicate with the on-board-computer through CAN bus. Extra mass and volume can be used for additional devices to complete more complex function. This paper describes the missions of the BUAA-Sat and presents an overview of the spacecraft system and subsystem designs, description of key technologies, and preliminary hardware demonstrations of subsystems and satellite with all subsystems intergrated with each other in the structure.
