In order to fully realize the potential of Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) data for various applications, it is necessary to understand an accuracy and uncertainty in terms of product quality. In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for improved accuracy and reliability of EOS data. It is now generally recognized that Calibration and Validation (Cal/Val) are an essential component of any satellite system. Therefore the procedure of Cal/Val is well organized. However the validation process for EOS application products was carried out by individual users. Especially, there is not a systematic validation procedure for application products from high resolution satellite data. The procedure of product validation is an important component as well as the Cal/Val activities for data users because of the product reliability. The validation procedure and validation system should be established in order to distinctly understand an accuracy and uncertainty of final products. However the validation site with various ground truth dataset must be prepared to fulfill the systematic validation. The Product Validation Site (PVS) has been established in order to generate the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) application products such as a thematic map, orthorectified image, and many others and evaluate their reliability. The validation site was made up various in-situ measurement instruments and ground truth dataset. Various experimental studies with a field campaign were conducted during the establishment of validation sites. This paper summarizes the status of the validation site for KOMPSAT application products and presents major results from related activities.
