Final Amendments to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Public Health and Environmental Radiation Protection Standards for Yucca Mountain, Nevada

Pursuant to the Energy Policy Act of 1992, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency established public health and safety standards for the proposed spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. In 2001, EPA established standards to protect individuals from the undisturbed evolution of the disposal system and in circumstances of human intrusion, as well as standards to protect ground water, for 10,000 years after disposal. In response to a legal ruling vacating the compliance period, in 2008 EPA issued amended standards extending the compliance period to 1 million years.
