摘要

The multi-scale FE model developed in this study revealed some unique mechanical behaviors of the porous metal-backed acetabular cup. The contact stress results predicted from the macroscopic model show that this device has lower contact stress compared with a traditional metal-backed cup of the same geometry. The microscopic model indicates that a highly localized stress zone around the tantalum micro-strut in UHMWPE exists between the UHMWPE layer and the inter-digitation layer due to modulus mismatch.
