Preparation of Antibacterial Glass Fiber and Its Antibacterial Characteristics

Two kinds of antibacterial glass fiber (called as G12 and Gt) were prepared by bonding a bis-type quaternary ammonium compound, 1 , 4-Didodecyl -1 , 4-dihydroxyethylpiperadinium diiodides (called as DDP12), and a mono-type quaternary ammonium compound, N-tetradecyldimethyl (3-trimethoxysilylpropyl) ammonium chloride (called as TMMP), respectively, to the surface of glass fiber using a coupling agent, tetraethoxysilane. Antibacterial characteristic of G12 was investigated comparatively with Gt. The experimental results indicated that G12 has higher antimicrobial activity than Gt against a broad range of microorganisms, and average net microbicidal ratio against 10 strains of gram-negative, gram-positive bacteria and yeasts is 89.4% and 94.4% at 30 , pH 6.0, treated time of 30 min and 60min, respectively, which are 27.6 and 25.2 percentage point higher than those of Gt. Antibacterial activity of G12 was hardly influenced by environmental pH and temperature, and could not be removed from the surfaces of glass fiber by repeated washing with water.
