In this study, the effects of increasing 3-nitrophenol (3-NP) and decreasing glucose concentration in influent on the performance of a lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor were investigated at an operating temperature of 35. After acclimation, 3 °C -NP concentrations in influent were raised to 257.7 mg.L-1 from 56.2 mg.L-1 corresponding to 3-NP loading rates (3-NP LR) of 237.9 g.m-3.d-1 and 51.9 g.m-3.d-1. Above 99.0% 3-NP removal efficiencies were achieved at all 3-NP LR. The COD removal efficiency was above 90.8% at 3-NP LR as high as 97.1 g.m-3.d-1. After this loading rate, the COD removal efficiencies decreased to 80.8% at maximum 3-NP LR of 237.9 g.m-3.d-1. 3-Aminophenol (3-AP) was found to be the major intermediate compound through anaerobic degradation of 3-NP. Out of the total input of 3-NP, on molar basis, about 52.2%-104.1% was recovered in the form of 3-AP. The decrease of influent glucose content, corresponding COD concentrations from 2436 mg.L-1 to 682 mg.L-1, resulted in the increase of 3-NP in the effluent from 0.2 mg.L-1 to 81.4 mg.L-1, and a decrease in the COD removal from 80.8% to 33.0%.
