Characteristics of Gravity Wave Energy over Wuhan

The characteristics of kinetic and potential energy associated with gravity wave based on wind observation made in Radiosonde at Wuhan are compared in this paper. The monthly mean curves of kinetic energy and potential energy are highly correlated, and both reached minimum values in the summer season while maximum values in the winter season. The yearly trend of kinetic energy and potential energy is similar; both of them reach the maximum value in winter and minimum in summer. In addition, we calculate the ratio of kinetic energy to potential energy and select the data with height of 15-17 km, and the ratio agrees very closely with the theoretical expectation of gravity wave, and support previous comparisons of kinetic energy and potential energy made using MU radar in Japan. At last, the correlation between kinetic energy and wind speed is discussed and shows a strong correlation between kinetic energy and wind speed of 12 km, where exists a big jet stream in this height range. Then we conclude that the correlation between energy and jet stream is biggest, suggesting that the jet stream is likely to be a source which brings variation of the wind field fluctuates.
