Study on Dimensions Selection of Safety Climate in Metro Projects

Background: The metro projects developed rapidly recent years, but because of the characteristics of hazardousness, underground construction, decentralization and mobility in the tunnelling industry, they faced severe status of frequent, impactive safety accidents. More efficient, systemic accident preventing approaches including which focus on organizational factors have to be crying for in China. Objective: To discover the organizational reason for the hazards on construction site and to analyze the relationship between safety climates and safety results. Methods: A detailed literature review is firstly conducted, summarizing and analyzing the researches that struggled to find theoretical and empirical evidence to demonstrate actual links between safety climate and safety results such as accident rate, safety behavior, safety performance, perceived safety risks and so on. Then, on the basis of the previous researches and the characteristics of metro projects, Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) is used to select the main factors of safety climate on construction sites of metro projects. Results: The significant influence of safety climate on prediction of accident rate is demonstrated and the relationship between safety climate and safety behavior, safety performance and perceived safety risks also has been discovered. Then the leading factors of safety climate which could predict the safety results is analyzed for predict the safety results. Conclusions: The result factors selected by DEMATEL are shown to be excellent real-time signals to predict the site safety results of the metro projects.
