UBIQUE: CANADIAN MILITARY ENGINEERS IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT

This paper describes the unique role that the Canadian Military Engineers (CME) play withinthe Canadian Forces (CF) on deployed operations. While the CMEs play a vital role in protecting thesovereignty of Canada and have many domestic tasks, this paper focuses on the function of the CMEswithin a global construct. Whether the CF is deployed overseas under a North Atlantic TreatyOrganization (NATO), United Nations (UN) or a Coalition mandate, as a specialist classification within theCF, the CME has played a major role in recent deployments of Canadian troops around the world. Inorder to highlight the contributions of the Canadian Military Engineers abroad, Case Studies of operationsin Bosnia, East Timor, and in Afghanistan will be highlighted. As well, recent deployments of the DisasterAssistance Response Team (DART) to Sri Lanka and Pakistan will also be cited. In this way, they aretrue to their Latin motto, Ubique which means everywhere. In support of these activities, a rigorousresearch and development program has been supported by the Department of National Defence andselected initiatives are also included.
