This paper aims to answer two questions "How much lighting energy can be saved in applying translucent shades with lighting controls?" and "What impact can the operation strategy of these shades have on visual quality?". Different translucent shade control strategies are addressed in an attempt to maximize electric lighting energy savings while maintaining an acceptable discomfort glare condition and the view for the occupants. Perimeter private office spaces were simulated with static and dynamic shade control and electric lighting control on south and west orientations using EnergyPlus. Control strategies were based on daylight illuminance and direct sun penetration to determine hourly shading profiles that considered the shades to be either (1) fully closed or (2) fully open, for both a light and dark colored shade. The study considered five U.S. cities representing different climates and latitudes. The shade control strategies provide different electric lighting energy savings and visual quality, with a south and west-facing facade providing similar, but slightly different results.
