Advances in the speed of data acquisition for CT systems and the cost and capacity of hard disk storage devices have made the collection of volumetric CT data practicable in a high volume production operation. For high volume applications, the large, complex data sets produced by VCT inspections will need to be analyzed and dispositioned by Level II operatorswith a cycle time similar to that of digital radiography inspections. Volumetric image review software packages have not been designed with the requirements of high volume inspection applications in mind. Before VCT-based inspections can be inserted into high volume lines, image review tools will need to be improved to encompass the requirements of production inspection environments.
