Quantitative evaluation between rival planning systems with dosimetric indices

To evaluate and quantify the potential dosimetric gains of two intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) modalities for head-and-neck (H&N) tumor cases with PET/CT images guided target volume delineation. Twenty patients curatively treated by PS1 were examined. Dose plans were compared using dose volume histograms (DVH), conformity index (CI) and homogeneity index (HI) of the planned target volume (PTV) and improvement ratios of CI and HI. A dosimetric gain in conformity and homogeneity of PTV and sparing of OARs was significantly obtained in PS1 versus PS2 plans in the study cohort. Whether such dosimetric superiority in PS1 could transfer into clinical advantages needs further investigation.
