The National Air Emission Monitoring Study (NAEMS) is required by a U.S. EPA air consentagreement, in which livestock producers agreed to collect air emission data in exchange for moretime to report their emissions and apply for any necessary permits. Measurement of livestock airemissions from representative livestock production facilities are a major component of the study.This paper describes an air emission study being undertaken at a swine breeder facility or sowfarm in Oklahoma. Measurement of emissions of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and particulatematter are being undertaken at a 2750sowbreeder facility comprising two gestation barns and a16roomfarrowing barn. A multipoint gas sampling system delivers air streams from 12locations on the farm to gas analyzers. Mass particulate matter concentrations are measured atone representative exhaust location per gestation barn and one representative exhaust location inthe monitored farrowing room. Measurements of barn static pressure and fan operational statusare combined with individual fan characteristics acquired insituto calculate building ventilationrate. A rigorous quality assurance process is used to ensure that high quality data is obtained.This data will be made available to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at the conclusionof the data collection and analysis phase of the study.
