The guided ultrasonic waves testing technology is a new NDT technology, and it is widely used in inspectingof pressure pipings in recent years. Insulated pipings are mainly used for transferring oil and chemicals. In thepast, the insulation of the pipings should be removed during testing, and it is costly. When the insulated pipings are tested by the guided waves, the insulation should be removed only one meter in length to fix the testing ring, and the guided waves are transmitted along the pipings, meanwhile, detecting the reflective wave which is caused by a flaw to determine the location and size of the flaw, this will be helpful in the inspection of the industrial pipings. The research on the guided wave technology is based on the scientific acoustic theory and it is also supported by a lot oftests. This paper expresses when testing insulated pipings, the mode of guided waves and the frequency based on the pipe thickness has been settled, the reflective waves will indicate the flaw location and size. This point of view has been verified through some site tests.
