PURPOSE: Provided are an inspection device and an inspection method capable of rapid and effective inspection of a nuclear reactor piping welded part. CONSTITUTION: The welding examination device for inspecting a nuclear reactor piping welded part by an ultrasonic wave is composed so as to have a transducer(12), a gated tone burst-type power amplifier(14), a sweep frequency generator(16), and an ultrasonic flaw detector(18). The transducer(12) is composed so as to form a non-axially symmetrically guided wave and to be formed by being fitted to the external form of a nuclear reactor cooling system piping. In this ultrasonic inspection method of the nuclear reactor piping weld zone, the guided wave is introduced into the piping, and the ultrasonic wave reflected from the piping is detected, and the reflected ultrasonic wave shows a defect of the welded part.
