Benefits of Modelling - the Structural Engineer's Perspective

The structural designs for the hotel and international terminal expansion being built at the Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport were carried out with the Tekla Structures program. Factory-producedelements as well as cast in-situ concrete structures were modelled for the location. 3D models andthree-dimensional conceptual images of the structure were generated with the software. Traditionaldrawings, as well as reports and lists for various purposes, were also modelled for productional andjob site purposes. The most important benefits resulting from modelling are increased planningconvenience, enhanced design accuracy and its ability to facilitate the solution of complexgeometric problems. The sooner modelling can be initialised in projects, the greater will be thebenefits attained. The greatest technical challenges in modelling are software- and hardware-relatedperformance as well as the software's stability. Overall, the benefits of modelling are considerablecompared to conventional design methods.
