In civil engineering and in mechanical engineering dynamic load cases have to be consideredresulting from earthquake, wind, vibrations of machines or starting of engines. For dynamicanalysis different methods can be used, for example modal analysis or time history analysis. For theassessment of the results of such a computation the user of computation software must havehowever a certain mechanical background, in order to understand the behaviour of the structurewhich is examined. In the current contribution the effect of nonlinearities on the dynamicalbehaviour of structures is discussed and the importance of consideration of nonlinearities is pointedout based on several examples.
