Design of a hand-held reader used for instruments management system is described in this paper. This instruments management system is built for universities laboratory and based on RFID technology. Those instruments require that the director throw into large amount of time and energy to the management. By building a testing platform in a department laboratory, each instrument selects a RFID label which has an EEPROM to memory the instrument information including its ID, price, type and so on. The hand-held reader is key point of the system; it includes the MCU, keyboard, LCD and the RFID reader module. By using this testing platform, all instruments getting in and out of the laboratory can be auto record and send the changed information to the control PC, the director can monitor all instruments state such as location in the first time.
