The increasing connection of distributed generation into a distribution network may lead to unacceptable voltage rise.An automatic voltage reference setting method,acting on the existing automatic voltage control relay for controlling the network feeder on-line tap changing transformer,can be used to address this problem.By measuring essential voltages on the distribution network critical nodes and using load profile modelling information to obtain pseudo voltage measurements for the network rest nodes,a state estimator calculates all node voltage vectors of the network.The automatic voltage reference setting method then compares all node voltages from the state estimator to determine an optimal voltage setting position for the automatic voltage control relay on the distribution network feeder.This can maximize distributed generation while maintaining the network voltage within limits.The automatic voltage reference setting method and its implementation are described.A closed-loop testing facility,based on a real time digital simulator,was constructed and used to test the proposed method.The results will show how the proposed method may be used to maximise the distributed generation connection into a distribution network feeder.
