Sewoon District Revitalization:A Large Scale Urban Center Redevelopment Project in Seoul to Cope with Environmental,Cultural and Tourism Issues

The urban environmental work of Sewoon district is the most important project to realize a new paradigm of urban redevelopment of Seoul. The purpose of this redevelopment is to accept the industrial use of surrounding blocks on Sewoon district, and combine the functions of revitalizing urban center such as culture, entertainment, tourism, shopping and residential function on 3 dimensions. The 3 themes of this redevelopment design are: 1) Reorganizing the structure of urban space, 2) Securing the harmony of greens,city, and tradition, with continuity, and 3)Developing of secure, clean and remarkable new downtown within the urban center. For this, in terms of architecture, we established guidelines on 5 main districts (culture park,Cheongaechun, Jongro area, area adjacent to the subway, previous waterway) in the area. In terms of landscape, we created north and south greens which connects Jongmyo and conserved historical places,The redevelopment project of Sewoon district is not just an economic solution for revitalizing urban center, but an environment-friendly solution to rehabilitate urban culture and history. I convince that it will transform Seoul into an international competitive city.
