Adsorption cooling systems are receiving significant attention due to continuously increasing energy and environmental concerns. Very little research efforts are directed towards smaller than 1 ton cooling systems. In this paper a novel small-scale adsorber cooling system design scheme is proposed and a prototype is built and tested. Activated carbon and butane is chosen as the adsorbent-refrigerant pair due to their favorable adsorption and operating characteristics in the design temperature range. It is found that a COP of 0.12 and cooling capacity of 89.6 W can be achieved. It is also realized that further improvements in the adsorber design is required to increase the operating reliability.
