This paper deals with a design method of real time state diagnosis function for a modeling support on finite element analysis (FEA). Through a command sequence analysis of an FEA code, a hierarchical structure was found for building a diagnosis system. The diagnostic programs were generated by detecting the structure pattern of command input history. The designed function presents a user's status and the adequacy of command input by comparing an expert log with a novice's log. Corrective action or reference knowledge with respect to user's incorrect command history was provided as a diagnostic decision to users. Implementation of functions was verified to lead users to a correct operation.
