In this paper, we propose a new power saving scheme known as IPCM/COMPOW with the goal of saving more power and maximizing the throughput of the multi-hop wireless ad hoc networks. Our proposed power saving scheme is designed by integrating the COMPOW protocol and an Improved Power Control MAC (IPCM) protocol into one protocol. This new protocol is operated in two phases. Initially, COMPOW protocol is used to select the minimum common power that can be suitable to provide a link from the source to the destination. In the second phase, the level of the selected common power is used by the IPCM protocol to find an optimum carrier sensing range that increase the network capacity and reduce the interference effect on the ongoing transmission. Our simulation results show that IPCM/COMPOW protocol can achieve high reduction in energy consumption and also improves the throughput efficiency compared to the schemes.
