Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are the next big advancement in digital communications. The key idea is to break a communication system into several tiny components and have them work together in a coordinated manner for significant increase in the overall system reliability. One of the major problems in WSN is self configuration of the network in an efficient manner to support mobility. Concatenated channel codes with interleaver in between (Turbo codes) have been shown to be a powerful scheme to combat fading in mobile environments. However, due to their complexity, turbo codes have not been yet implemented in distributed WSN with limited resources. This article presents a novel algorithm for efficient distributed self configuration based on wireless channel quality, which is both time and energy efficient. The method is designed in such a way to support distributed turbo coding in the network to push the network performance toward theoretical limits.
