Great advances have been made in recent years in non-destructive testing and evaluation(NDT&E)in the qualitative assessment of stresses,flaws and material properties,many of which can be applied to structural health monitoring.This paper reviews recent progress in NDT&E including sensor technology,imaging,signal processing,modelling and simulation,data fusion and system integration.Some new approaches such as MEMS sensor arrays,wireless sensor networks and pulsed technology for crack detection,corrosion,stress and microstructure are introduced and some recent experimental results using electromagnetic methods and magneto-acoustic emission are reported.To conclude,the paper will discuss the application of techniques developed in NDT&E to damage monitoring and life predication in intelligent structural health monitoring of multilayer structures and composite materials,and outline future directions including the use of embedded sensors in materials and structures.
