From Engineering Management to Management of Innovation and Technology: Mapping of Current Core Research Domains and Hot Topics

Using methodologies of mapping of science, the authors drew the maps of the research fronts of engineering management during 1996-2005 in order to identify the current core research domains and hot topics of current research on engineering management. The present study is based on bibliographic data retrieved from the Web of Science. The data contains all types of documents published in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management during 1996 to 2005. From the map of core research domains, we found that, through 50 years development, the research of engineering management has changed from traditional engineering management to innovation management. Management of innovation and technology, innovation implementation and diffusion, management of organizations and industrial strategy, and management information system has become the four core research domains of current engineering management.
