The discharge progress of ac coplanar plasma display panel ( PDP) has been investigated experimentally and theoretically. A segment-electrode configuration was designed to measure the local discharge current along the coplanar electrodes in both macro-cell experiments and two-dimensional (2D) fluid numerical simulations. The spread velocity of plasma on cathode was deduced and compared with that obtained from 2D fluid simulation. The results show that the surface photoemission has distinct effects on the transient discharge in PDF cell , which accelerates the development of plasma and affects the local discharge characteristics. The photoeraission has less effect when operating at higher voltage than at lower voltage. The influence of the secondary electron emission from cathode on the discharge efficiency of PDP cell has also been discussed in this paper.
