Dynamic Transformation of a Residential Area in Dhaka City

摘要

Phenomenal growth of the city' population and unplanned development are contributing to rapid commercialization of residential areas in Dhaka. It is a deplorable fact that residential areas like Dhanmondi have lost has much of their residential character. Thus overcrowding, uncontrolled development, encroachment and inadequate housing are some of the problems confronting the city. The challenge is to devise strategies for more efficient and effective planning. The transformation in Dhanmondi residential area is a demand driven phenomenon. It needs to practice high density housing. Enabling, facilitating and channeling the potential of the informal sectors might be an answer to the problem.
