Forest/land fres has become an annual problem in South Sumatera Province, Indonesia. It is assured that during the long dry season (drought), these fires mostly occured in the remote areas which damaged hundred hectares of forest/land. Information on the fire-affected areas is very important for the rehabilitation planning. Unfortunately, data gained from the terestrial survey are often very inaccurate. This is mainly due to the inconsistent methods applied in determining the burnt areas. Besides, the surveys would be very expensive and take long time to conduct. The use of the satellite remote sensing data then plays a very important role to solve one of these problems.In this paper, several products of the Terra/Aqua MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data are used to detect and analyze the burnt areas from the 2006 forest/land fire event in South Sumatera Province. The distribution of active fire, thermal anomaly, and reflectance change information are evaluated in different land cover types. The field observations are also used as reference. The preliminary results based on this method show a total burnt area of around 498.000 hectares. Nearly 39.000 hectares from this total area were burnt in large plantation areas in the Ogan Komering Ilir regency with high confidence, while the rest were spread in small shifting agricultural areas in some other regencies with lower confidence.
