Because of the population increment there is a growing need for micro-level planningand particularly the demand for crop insurance which increases the need for fieldlevel yield statistics. Therefore from economic point of view, accurate and fast cropyield estimation is very important in national and regional scale.There are two methods for yield estimation: Conventional and remote sensing.Conventional methods are often complicated, costly, time consuming and they cannotbe run in large scales. Therefore it is necessary to use cheaper/faster methods for cropyield estimation.Remote sensing data has the potential and the capacity to provide spatial informationat global scale; of features and phenomena on earth on an almost real-time basis.They have the potential not only in identifying crop classes but also of estimating cropyield.In this paper first, conventional methods and their disadvantages are reviewed. Thencrop yield estimation methods based on remote sensing data, were compared to eachother and their advantages and disadvantages are discussed.
