Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, when used in anionic living polymerization system for the co-polymerization of styrene and conjugated dienes (butadiene, isoprene), was found to moderate the cross propagation rates (Kbs /Ksb, Ksi/Kis) of the butadiene and isoprene. The final product was a random styrene/butadiene or random styrene/isoprene copolymer. The polymerization was done isothermally in one-gallon batch reactors in the absence of polar modifiers. The polymerization rates calculated from the conversion of the two monomers verse time were found to be very similar. This process will be discussed in more detail.
