Structural Identification, Damage Identification and Structural Health Monitoring

There are numerous Structural identification (Strld) methods and techniques. The purpose of Strld in the civil infrastructure arena include: a) design validation of new structures, b) condition assessment of existing structures, c) analytical model updating of existing and new structures, and d) damage identification (Dmld) of existing structures. Many Strld researchers utilized Strld methods for Dmld. However, not all Strld methods are suited for Dmld and not all damages are possible to be identified by popular Strld methods. This paper investigates the relationship between Strld methods and Dmld. We investigate which Strld method is suited for Dmld for the type of damages that may affect civil infrastructure. It will be shown that some damages can be identified by Strld methods, while some other damages need specific methods that are not within the conventional realm of Strld methods. Some guidelines for choosing Strld methods that are appropriate for Dmld are given.
