Spectral Mismatch in Power Rating Measurements

This work investigates the effects of different spectra on short circuit current generation of different photovoltaic technologies. The effects of modelled natural and simulated spectra are compared by using a variety of solar simulators and clear-sky spectra generated by SMARTS. It is shown that the use of an appropriate reference cell can minimise the measurement uncertainty to less than two percent. It is also shown that a single reference cell will not be able to predict spectral mismatch for all PV technologies. A very significant difference between natural and simulated spectra was shown for multi-junctions and even if the spectra have a broadly similar distribution, this is not necessarily a good predictor of measurement uncertainty.
