The potential applications of noble metal nanoparticles to silicon solar cells are discussed. Noble metal nanoparticles exhibit resonant frequencies in the visible and NIR. At these frequencies the absorption and scattering by the particle is increased, and in addition the local electromagnetic field is greatly enhanced. Three potential solar cell applications that exploit these properties are given, and fabrication methods are also presented.
