This paper is devoted to the design of a Thyristor-Switched Shunt Reactor (TSSR) and Active Power Filter (APF) combination as a fully static solution to the power quality problem of Bursa Light Rail Transportation (LRT) System. A comparison between the fully-static solution, and conventional solution which is composed of 11th and 13th harmonic filters permanently connected to 34.5 kV bus, and circuit breaker switched and RC snubber protected shunt reactors is also made in the paper. The experimental results obtained in the field for Thyristor Switched Shunt Reactor are in a good agreement with theoretical results, and meet the power factor regulations currently used in the country.
