Evaluation of a 32P patch for therapy of squamous cell carcinoma incats

Brachytherapy has been a big challenge in nuclear medicine in order to apply thistherapeutic modality to cancer treatment. The aim of this work was to evaluate a silicon patch coatedwith Pirocarbotrat? for topical application in skin cancer lesions. We selected four adult cats withsquamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Measurements of the lesions were taken to specially designed thepatches for their application on the lesion surface. Dosimetric calculations were done in each casetaking into account the time of exposure and the activity contained in the patch. Clinical evaluationshowed that in one case tumor disappeared and in the other three cases, lesion reductions were about50% of their original size. Peritumoral fibrosis and central necrosis appeared in the treated site. Theshared feature in all the four cases was the great local inflammatory response at the site where patcheswere applied. All these responses are in accordance with those expected after radiation therapy andthey are also indicative of the effectiveness of the treatment. However, the histopathological results ofthe follow-up biopsies, showed that total remission was not achieved. This clinical experience allowsus to confirm treatment efficacy of the 32P patch for skin cancer but signalling the importance of theplanning dose for future experiences in order to achieve total remission.
