This paper illustrates the Malaysian experience in implementing and promoting effective radiationsafety program. Current management practice demands that an organization inculcate culture of safetyin preventing radiation hazard. The aforementioned objectives of radiation protection can only be metwhen it is implemented and evaluated continuously. Commitment from the workforce to treat safetyas a priority and the ability to turn a requirement into a practical language is also important toimplement radiation safety policy efficiently. Maintaining and improving safety culture is acontinuous process. There is a need to establish a program to measure, review and audit health andsafety performance against predetermined standards. This program is known as radiation safety auditand is able to reveal where and when action is needed to make improvements to the systems ofcontrols. A structured and proper radiation self-auditing system is seen as the sole requirement to meetthe current and future needs in sustainability of radiation safety. As a result safety culture, which hasbeen a vital element on safety in many industries can be improved and promote changes, leading togood safety performance and excellence.
