Improving Drivers Safety and Driving Pleasure: Next Generation ADAS and IVIS

The BMW Group Research and Technology is, amongst others, developing new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and In Vehicle Information Systems (IVIS) to improve driving safety, driving comfort, and driving pleasure of future vehicles. In addition to improved onboard sensors, the next generation systems will also integrate communication technologies. This will elevate system capabilities onto a new level. For the development of these new functionalities, new development processes and development methods were introduced. The Top-Down-Approach and the Bottom-Up-Approach along with other methods are clearly demonstrated in their application to the topics of Turning/Crossing Assistance and Active Pedestrian Protection. The whole spectrum of next generation ADAS and IVIS is demonstrated by the examples of Intersection Assistance, where the whole set of functionalities is presented, Remote Garage Parking, where a driverless car automatically parks in a narrow garage space, and the BMW TrackTrainer, where an autonomous driving car indicates the perfect driving line of a race track to the driver. The technological challenges like communication technologies, high precision position measurement, and human machine interface design are discussed at the end of this paper.
