This paper examines which potential barriers have to be overcome in order to enable a widespread implementation of Automated Urban Transport Systems (AUTS). This is mainly based on work carried out for the CyberCars and CyberMove projects. Work in these as well as in other related projects has produced a wealth of evidence for potential benefits of innovative transport technologies for providing more sustainable urban mobility, but implementation has been very slow so far.. The implementation strategy suggested here includes a staged introduction of AUTS to prepare the market and to prove the technology, education of the market to address unfamiliarity with AUTS and securing funding.
