JARI has examined the functionality of inter-vehicle communication (IVC) protocols for use in safe driving support systems through field experiments and simulations. In the FY 2005 study on IVC using the 5.8 GHz band, we found that the relay function is effective in non-line-of-sight environments. It was also found that a simple relay protocol may cause communication congestion when the number of communicating vehicles increases. To resolve this issue, a new relay control protocol is proposed. In FY 2006, we verified the proposed protocol function through field experiments and simulations. This paper describes the results of the experiments and simulations.
