An Improved Free-interface Substructure Mode Synthesis Method

The purpose of this paper is to present an improved method which has been developed from a traditional free-interface substructure mode synthesis method. In this improved method, the flexibility matrix of the neglected high-order modes, which is properly expressed by the reserved low-order modes, is improved and put into the motion equations of substructures. The paper also presented how the improved residual flexibility matrix is derived in detail. Properly considering the effects of high modes on the equations of motion for a structure after mode truncation, the computation accuracy of this method is raised greatly. Finally, the improved technique is validated for an example--a beam with both ends built-in. It is shown in this paper that the improved method has a comparatively higher accuracy in comparison with the free-interface method known as Hou technique. As a consequence, this method can satisfy engineering requirements, and be applied in general large-scale structure systems, indicating its potential applicability in the structural vibration field.
