A hybrid method is presented for the second order design sensitivity analysis of multibody system described by differential-algebraic equations in this paper. Based on Lagrange equations of multibody system dynamics and a general objective function, the direct differentiation method is applied to first order sensitivity analysis firstly.Then the adjoint variable equations are set up to solve the terms involving second order derivatives with respect to design variables. This hybrid method pays both attention to the easy implementation of direct differentiation method and the high efficiency of adjoint variable method for large system. A numerical example of slider-crank mechanism validates the accuracy and efficiency of the hybrid method finally.
