Predicting the behavior of solute distribution in dendrite and crystallization within the inter-dendrite regions quantitatively, in order to develop high quality aluminum alloy products, is an important area of research. With this in mind, a mathematical model was developed based on a method for analyzing inter-dendritic micro-segregation. This method was used to analyze crystallization during the solidification of aluminum ternary alloy (Al-Fe-Si). The main characteristic of this mathematical analysis is that diffusion of solutes in both the solid and liquid has been taken into consideration, and that solute movement behavior was estimated by thermodynamics databases. Therefore, this method can be used to estimate the kind of precipitation and its in what proportion it exists in the dendrite. Furthermore, analysis based on this mathematical model was used in stepped mold casting tests to investigate cooling rate and the chemical composition effects.
