摘要

A stable inert metallic anode opens the possibility of improving the operation and performance of aluminum reduction cells. In the semi-vertical electrode configuration the cell thermal equilibrium can be maintained even if the interpolar distance is lower than 3 cm. This advantage compensates for the thermodynamic penalty of the oxygen evolving anode, and should allow increasing the cell production by a factor of two. The thermo-electric conditions of the cell having semi-vertical electrode configuration using the oxygen evolving anode are established. The experimental results of the semivertical electrode configuration in a 100 A laboratory cell, working with Tinor Wettable Cathode and a de Nora Inert Metallic Anode, are presented.
