As the world maintains its heavy reliance on oil, the supply and demand crunch is forcing manufacturersand consumers to find alternatives to petroleum based products. One possible means to reduce the need foroil in the polyurethane market is to replace petroleum-based polyols with bio-based polyols, such as a soybasedsystem.Utilizing bio-based products instead of the traditional petroleum-based options can help reduce the heavyreliance on foreign petroleum-based sources for raw materials and strengthen the domestic economy whileproviding environmental benefits. Bio-based products can also provide some relief in the upward spiralpolyol pricing.In his article, "The Power of the Sun," Bela Liptak summarizes Jean Laherrere’s work on global energyconsumption [1995-99] (1), (2).The global energy consumption graph in Figure No. 1 shows the importance in developing the technologyfor renewable resources.
